As we were sitting around the campfire Friday night at our Lifegroup campout, Micah Quick asked each one of us one at a time "what is your disability?" Micah is Dennis and Karen's 21-year old autistic son. He has been learning about disabilities in one of his classes.
The answers from each of us revealed a range of disabilities. For me, I'm pastel color blind and nearly blind in my left eye, for others it was a chronic illness such as Cynthia with MS, or another with debilitating anxiety... at least one claimed no disability, but really are we all able to do everything?
The Apostle Paul had something going on with him. He called it the thorn in his flesh (and it wasn't his wife, that's an old joke, so cut it out you guys out there who are chucking to yourselves). I've learned that God wants to accomplish His work through imperfect people to do that which is His perfect work to point people to Him not us.
One of George's favorite versus to inspire our staff is Ephesians 3:20-21. "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!"
So behind the scenes at Abundant Life we realize we are really not able to do what it is God wants, but we are able to be what he wants; his faithful loving servants. And God will accomplish what He wants, in spite of our disabilities.
